Ping Li: Dental Hygienist

How long have you worked in the dental field?
I have worked in the dental field since 2017.

When did you graduate from medical school?
I graduated from medical school in 2004.

Where did you practice as a physician before moving to the U.S?
I practiced as a physician in China for 7 years.

What inspired you to pursue a career in dental hygiene?
I was inspired by my friend who is a dentist to try the Dental Hygiene program.

Where did you go to school to get your Dental Hygiene Degree?
I went back to school at NOVA and went to Howard University to get my Dental Hygiene Degree in 2021.

What is your motto for your career?
"Stay hungry, stay foolish" from Steve Jobs is my motto. Just like Jobs, I desire to expand upon my prior knowledge to better achieve practice results with patients.

What do you particularly enjoy about your job as a dental hygienist?
I particularly enjoy building trusting relationships with my patients to improve their dental health. I feel a great sense of reward when patients improve their dental health and make them feel comfortable and at ease.

What do you like to do in your free time?
I love spending time with my family, traveling, and trying new technology in my free time.

How has your prior experience as a physician informed your work as a dental hygienist?
My prior experience as a physician has given me a strong foundation in medical knowledge and patient care. This knowledge has been helpful in understanding the whole-body health implications of poor oral hygiene, and I can better communicate with patients about how their oral health relates to their overall health.

What is one new technology or technique in dental hygiene that you are excited to try?
I am excited to try using intraoral cameras with my patients. These cameras allow me to take detailed images of a patient's teeth and gums, and then display them on a monitor. This allows patients to better understand the state of their oral health and enables us to identify potential issues earlier.

How has being a dental hygienist impacted your life?
Being a dental hygienist has given me the opportunity to have a fulfilling career where I can make a real difference in people's lives. It has also allowed me to constantly learn and improve my skills, which is something I really value.
